Fontenay-le-Comtein the South Vendee is located on the French Atlantic Coast.It is blessed with a mainly maritime climate and is a city with a remarkable heritage of art and architecture.The beautiful Vendee River flows through the town and several factors contribute to this ancient capital of Lower Poitou which takes its name from a famous fountain.
In 1242 Fontenay-le-Comte became the capital of Bas-Poitou and since the Middle Ages it has developed an excellent economy through the cloth and leather industries. During the Renaissance,its reputation was supported by three Royal Fairs,travelling merchants of all nationalities,and finally by an intellectual dimension as St Francis of Assizi bestowed upon the city its gushing fountain and source of fine spirits.
